Boris Otto (born November 25, 1971 in Hamburg ) is a German industrial engineer. He holds the Chair of Industrial Information Management at the Technical University of Dortmund and the Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology ISST in Dortmund.

Life

Otto studied industrial engineering in Hamburg in the inter-university course from 1992 to 1999. He then worked as a consultant at PwC Unternehmensberatung GmbH. In 2000 he moved to the Institute for Ergonomics and Technology Management IAT at the University of Stuttgart . In 2001 he moved to the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering and Organization IAO , which forms an operational unit with the IAT. In 2002 Otto received his doctorate from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Stuttgart under Hans-Jörg Bullinger as Dr.-Ing. From 2003 to 2006 Otto was a consultant in business consulting at SAP Deutschland AG & Co. KG in Walldorf before he moved to the Institute for Information Systems at the University of St. Gallen. There he founded and headed the Competence Center Corporate Data Quality (CC CDQ) . He has been on the Board of Directors of CDQ AG since January 1, 2015. In 2011 Otto spent a year as a Research Fellow with M. Eric Johnson at the Center for Digital Strategies of the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA. In 2012 he completed his habilitation with Hubert Österle at the School of Management at the University of St. Gallen. In 2013 Otto was offered a professorship at the Technical University of Dortmund and has held the Chair of Industrial Information Management (until August 31, 2018 Audi endowed Chair for Supply Net Order Management) at the Logistics Campus of the TU Dortmund. In parallel to his chair, Otto took over the Information Management & Engineering department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML . With the establishment of the Fraunhofer Innovation Center for Logistics and IT in 2014, Otto also joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Technology ISST . Boris Otto has been the managing director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology ISST in Dortmund since January 1, 2017 .

Research priorities

Otto's main research interests lie at the interface between information management and supply chain management and include the digitization of production and logistics, data sovereignty in Industry 4.0, data management in large companies as well as business models and digital business engineering.
