Hubert Österle (born June 24, 1949 in Dornbirn ) is professor emeritus at the Institute for Information Systems at the University of St. Gallen and was director of this institute and founder of several companies until 2015.

Life

Hubert Österle studied business administration at the Universities of Innsbruck and Linz . In 1973 he did his doctorate with Peter Mertens at the Institute for Business Administration at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg on the subject of “Computer-aided decision training”. After working as a consultant at IBM Germany , Österle completed his habilitation in 1980 as a scientific assistant to Joachim Griese at the chair for business informatics at the University of Dortmund with a thesis on the subject of "Design of business information systems".

From 1980 to 2014 Österle was a full professor for business informatics at the University of St. Gallen. In 1989 he founded the Institute for Information Systems (IWI-HSG). In 1997 he initiated the postgraduate course for the “ Master of Business Engineering ” (today “ Executive MBA in Business Engineering”). Österle was Editor-in-Chief of Electronic Markets magazine and a member of the editorial boards of other magazines. Under his guidance, over 100 dissertations in the field of business informatics were created. Professors Rainer Alt, Volker Bach, Walter Brenner, Leo Brecht, Elgar Fleisch, Christine Legner, Thomas Gutzwiller, Boris Otto and Gerold Riempp emerged from his chair as leading representatives of their subject. In March 2015 Österle received an honorary doctorate from the Wroclaw University of Economics.

In addition to his scientific work, Hubert Oesterle founded in 1989, consulting firm The Information Management Group , 2003 Business Engineering Institute St. Gallen AG , 2006, the CDQ AG (corporate data quality) and 2012 Amiona AG .

Research areas

His main research areas were business engineering , corporate data quality , independent living , consumerization , and sourcing in the financial industry, and since his retirement it has been life engineering.
