Peter Mertens (business IT specialist)

Peter Mertens (born May 18, 1937 in Seifhennersdorf ) is one of the founding fathers of business informatics in German-speaking countries. Mertens was the first professor for business informatics in Germany.

Professional background

Peter Mertens studied industrial engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt and received his doctorate there in 1961. Dr. rer. pole. Until 1963 he was a research assistant at the TH Darmstadt. He then worked at the Technical University of Munich , the Johannes Kepler University Linz and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1966, Mertens submitted the first habilitation thesis in German-speaking countries on the subject of business informatics at the Technical University of Munich: Inter-company cooperation and integration in automated data processing .

In 1968, Peter Mertens took over the first chair in the German-speaking world that focused on business data processing, Chair III for business administration at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz .

Until September 2005, Peter Mertens held the chair for business administration , especially business informatics I at the economics and social science faculty of the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . At the same time he was head of the computer science research group "Business Applications" at the Technical Faculty. Since then he has been working as emeritus at his previous chair.

Mertens is the author of numerous books. These include 23 monographs that he wrote alone or as a co-author. He was also involved in the publication of 26 compilations. Volume 1 of his monograph Integrated Information Processing has been published in 18 editions. His books have been translated into English, Chinese, Italian, and Russian. Furthermore, he has written over 270 journal articles, over 120 smaller contributions and more than 290 contributions to compilations.

He is a Fellow of the Society for Computer Science , an honorary member of the Association of University Lecturers for Business Administration and an honorary doctorate from five universities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon, the ring of honor from the Vienna University of Economics and Business and the honorary award of the Dr. Theo and Friedl Schöller Research Center for Business and Society for his life's work.
