Dieter Bernhard Herrmann (born January 3, 1939 in Berlin ) is a German astronomer and author of numerous popular science books on astronomy . In his scientific work, he dealt with the early development of astrophysics and the application of quantitative methods in the history of science .

Live and act

Herrmann studied physics at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 1957 to 1963. From 1963 to 1969 he was employed at the State Center for Radiation Protection in the GDR . In 1969 the doctorate to Dr. rer. nat. at the Humboldt University on the subject of the emergence of astronomical journals in Germany, 1798–1821 . From November 1, 1976 to September 30, 2004, he headed the Archenhold Observatory in Berlin-Alt-Treptow as the successor to Diedrich Wattenberg . In 1986 Herrmann completed his habilitation as Dr. sc. and the appointment as honorary professor. In 1987 he was the founding director of the associated Zeiss large planetarium in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg . He also presented the popular science program “AHA” on East German television for 14 years , for which he was awarded the GDR TV's Golden Laurel three times . Herrmann's work includes his extensive lecturing activities. He is the author of 37 books, 150 scientific and around 2000 popular scientific publications as well as the successful planetarium programs "Fantastic Universe", "Stars, Nebula, Fire Wheels", "When the Moon Came to the Tailor", "The Great Tour through the World of Planets" (Premiere 1993).

Herrmann is a member of the International Astronomical Union , the European Astronomical Society , the Leibniz-Sozietät Berlin, the Berlin Scientific Society , the Astronomical Society and other scientific associations. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences and on the scientific advisory board of the Anomalistics Journal published by the Society for Anomalistics . Herrmann has lived as a freelance researcher and author in Berlin since October 2004. From 2006 to January 2012 he was President of the Leibniz Society (since 2007 Leibniz Society of Sciences in Berlin eV). On June 27, 2012 he was elected to the board of Urania eV Berlin . On May 18, 2012 Herrmann was made an honorary member of the Society of German-speaking Planetariums “for his extraordinary services to imparting astronomical knowledge and for the development of the planetarium landscape in the German-speaking area” .

From January 2010 to April 2015 Herrmann gave a monthly overview of the current starry sky in his video column "Herrmanns Himmelsblicke" on the website of the Märkische Oderzeitung newspaper. Since September 26, 2010, the minor planet (103460) discovered on January 11, 2000 in the Drebach observatory (Ore Mountains) has been named Dieterherrmann. On September 17, 2019, Herrmann was awarded the renowned Bruno H. Bürgel Prize of the Astronomical Society for outstanding popular presentations in the field of astronomy in the media. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Study Foundation of the Berlin House of Representatives since 1994 and was appointed a member of the board by its President in 2020.
