The ruins of the ancient city

Garama ( Greek  Γαράμη Garame , modern name Germa ) is an ancient city in Libya. The ruins of Garama are located in southern Libya , in Wadi al-Haya , about 40 kilometers east of Awbārī (Ubari) and 160 kilometers southwest of Sabhā . It is considered the center of the lost Garamanten empire and the namesake of this culture.

history

The oldest ruins suggest a settlement from around 5000 BC. Close. Three main development phases were identified, which extend up to four meters below the horizon of the last medieval settlement.

In the 1st century BC There were battles with the Romans who, under proconsul Lucius Cornelius Balbus Minor , advanced into the Sahara and possibly destroyed Garama (20-19 BC). The latter is, however, now doubted. Rather, it is believed that agreements were made between the rivals. With their campaigns from 197 to 203 the Romans reached Garama and conquered it, but their presence there only lasted a few years.

The campaigns of the Roman senator Quintus Anicius Faustus in the years 197 to 202 AD reached Garama and for a short time led to a shift of the Limes Tripolitanus by up to 400 kilometers to the south

In the middle of the 7th century AD, the last ruler of Garama was deposed during the Arab invasion . The city was conquered by Uqba ibn Nafi in 669 .

The decline of the city is also attributed to excessive water consumption and the resulting water shortage in connection with a further deterioration in the climate.
