Society for Anomalies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Society for Anomalies ( GfA ) is a recognized non-profit association based in Freiburg im Breisgau . About 150 members say they support the critical and interdisciplinary discussion of scientific anomalies ( anomalistics ), extraordinary human experiences and parasciences .

aims

The aim of the society is stated to stimulate and promote scientific research in the mentioned subject area and to inform the public about it. Not only should the truth be checked and explanations should be sought, but psychosocial backgrounds should also be taken into account. The guidelines cited are as unbiased as possible and a pluralism of methodological approaches and content-related positions.

history

The association was founded in 1999 by former members of the Society for the Scientific Investigation of Parasciences (GWUP) and representatives of various parasciences under the name “Forum Parasciences”. In contrast to the skeptics movement represented by the GWUP in the German-speaking area , a forum should be created for constructive dialogue between critics and representatives of parasciences.

In 2002 the association was renamed the "Society for Anomalies".

activities

Since 2001 the Society for Anomalistics has published the " Journal for Anomalistics ". It also publishes the series of publications of the Society for Anomalistics . In 2015, on behalf of the Society for Anomalistics and the Institute for Frontier Areas of Psychology and Mental Hygiene , the Schattauer Verlag published the manual of scientific anomalies , which, according to the publisher, is the "first German-language manual of unusual phenomena and experiences".

Another field of activities is the organization of conferences and panel discussions. The last conference took place under the title Altered States of Consciousness - Extraordinary Experiences in November 2018 in Marburg .

Series of publications

Since 2003 the Society for Anomalistics has published the series of publications by the Society for Anomalistics , which was later renamed Perspektiven der Anomalistik and has since been published by LIT-Verlag . According to the Society for Anomalistics, the aim of the series is to promote a critical and interdisciplinary discourse in science and society about anomalistic phenomena, extraordinary human experiences and the so-called parasciences.
