Antje Herbst

Antje-Friederike Herbst (born February 1967 in Hanover ) is a German captain . She is one of the very few women in the captain's profession. Autumn became known nationwide through reports in the media .

Life

education and profession

After graduating from school, Antje Herbst completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter , but then decided on shipping and initially hired on a sailing ship . She worked for seven years on board traditional  sailors in the passenger voyage - initially as a "deckhand", later with a Dutch patent as a helmsman  - and mainly sailed the North and Baltic Seas . After receiving an exemption from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), she studied nautical science at the Maritime Department of the University of Wismar in Warnemünde and graduated in 2004 with a master's license .

She then drove as second and first officer , initially for a short time on a container ship and then in the area of heavy lift shipping . Since 2004 she has been employed by the Bremen-based project and heavy lift shipping company Beluga Shipping , which has been in insolvency proceedings since May 2011 and whose core business started in June 2011 from the newly founded Hansa Heavy Lift (HHL) of the US investment company Oaktree Capital Management was taken over.

Fall took over in February 2009 as the first female captain of the Beluga fleet to 134.65  meters long multipurpose -Schwergutfrachter Beluga Revolution , the lead ship of the R-series of Beluga. The ship, built in 2005 by the Dutch shipyard group Volharding Shipyards for the Beluga Group , has a speed of 18  kn , a container capacity of 547  TEU and a deadweight of 10,536  dwt .

public perception

Antje Herbst is "the only German female captain of a heavy lift freighter" and one of only ten female captains on long journeys in Germany (as of 2012). Her special professional situation as a woman in a “purely male job”, in which “women are not normal”, met with national public interest, and there were numerous reports about Antje Herbst in national newspapers , magazines and specialist journals as well as on television .

2010 turned ZDF about them a TV - report that in the ZDF series ZDF.reportage shown and now further television as DW-TV , Phoenix , ZDFinfokanal and 3sat aired and sometimes repeated several times. She was portrayed in detail in print media and internet newspapers such as Badische Zeitung , FAZ.NET , Neues Deutschland and Weser-Kurier .
