Stadtmitte is a district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock . It mainly consists of the historic city center within the city ​​wall , which completely surrounded the city until 1830, with the northern and eastern old town . In addition, the Steintor suburb to the south is part of the district.

In the Middle Ages Rostock was divided into three urban areas - Neustadt, Mittelstadt and Old Town.

Today's district Stadtmitte comprises the actual city center as well as the Steintor suburb and the adjacent areas up to the southern city limits with the incorporated former village of Dalwitzhof.

Part of the city center, the northern old town , extends north of Langen Strasse to Grubenstrasse. In the west of this former harbor district, large-scale prefabricated apartment buildings were built in the 1980s . Lange Straße was rebuilt in the 1950s as a socialist thoroughfare after the war damage. The Kröpeliner Straße , which has been a pedestrian zone in the city center since 1968 , is the shopping mile in Rostock . Another noteworthy street in the city center is Breite Straße . Here are the cinema Cinestar Capitol Filmpalast , the Galeria Kaufhof , which in the GDR nor the Centrum was -Warenhaus, restaurants, various cafes and shops.

The main station is located on the southern edge of the district and is connected to the city center by tram lines 3, 4, 5 and 6. The other two tram lines 1 and 2 also cross the city center. The south-east of the Steintor suburb can be reached with bus lines 22 and 23.

In the years around and after 2000, several inner-city main roads in the south and west of the city center were newly or expanded for car traffic. In return, the area around the Neuer Markt was calmed down.
