List of monuments, fountains and sculptures in Rostock
The list contains the monuments, fountains and sculptures in the Hanseatic city of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is limited to the recording of objects in public space . The oldest surviving works of art are the relief figures on St. Mary's Church from the 14th century and atonement stones from the 16th century. Due to the historical circumstances - the time of National Socialism , Stalinism , the GDR period, the post-reunification period - there was always politically motivated destruction of works of art and monuments. More recently, some works of art have been damaged by theft or vandalism.
Most of the objects are concentrated in the historic city center, but also in the new residential areas that were built during the GDR era, there were always commissioned works for artists, often with a corresponding political background. After the turnaround in 1989/90 and with the start of large-scale renovation and renovation work in all parts of the city, many new works of art were added, some of which were also commissioned by private individuals and companies.
The list is structured by a rough thematic classification. Within the topic list, the objects were sorted chronologically according to their creation. The exact location is georeferenced under the abbreviation Coord .
