Training and teaching

Susanne Rast studied sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee from 1981–1986 . Before that she had completed a pottery apprenticeship (1980–1981) in Ahrenshoop. She completed her studies with Jo Jastram , Rolf Biebl and Eberhart Bachmann in 1986 with a diploma, followed by a three-year traineeship with Bachmann (degree Magister Artium). Since 1989 she has been working as a freelance sculptor under the artist name Susanne Rast.

In 1990 she founded the private art school “Kontrapunkt”, in 2004 the producer gallery “raum 5” in Berlin, in 2005 the artist group Marfa, based on the Texas model of Donald Judd, as a place for the presentation of object-based works, the characteristics of which are rigorous purity and clarity of form. In 2000 she taught at the Technical University of Braunschweig , 1986–1989 at the evening school of the Berlin-Weißensee School of Art in the field of sculpture.

In 2002 Susanne Rast received the Art Prize of the Duchy of Lauenburg , in 2011 she was nominated for the Art Prize of the City of Rostock for Sculpture and Object, 2012 for the Art Prize of the City of Rostock for Sculpture and Drawing, and in 2014 for the Art Prize of the Mecklenburg Insurance Group for Fine Art.

She lives and works in Marlow in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Susanne Rast's work includes sculptures as well as hand drawings and etchings. Both groups of works are equally important. She forms the figurative sculpture in plaster of paris for bronze, beats it in marble or works wood with a chainsaw, chisel, mallet and hatchet. Her works stand out due to the body presence of the figures, the tense body-space relationships and a sensitive habitus of figurative physicality. With her oeuvre she stands in the tradition of Lehmbruck, Giacometti, Lipchitz and Richier; in the elongated, elongated figures, borrowings from the inner expressiveness of the late Gothic can be seen. The focus of her work is the human figure in its relationship to the reality that surrounds it, as an expression of ideas and inner states. In her more recent works, Rast deals with people beyond the norm and tries to capture and reflect their inner world in the sculptures.
