Katzow Sculpture Park - Entrance and "Art Barn"

The Katzow Sculpture Park is one of the largest in Europe with over 100 sculptures on an area of 20  hectares . It is located just outside of Katzow in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district .

Sculptures by almost 100 artists from 23 countries are here in the Western Pomerania landscape between Greifswald and Wolgast . The main material is wood and steel. Some of the sculptures have a dead weight of 20 t and reach a height of 18 m. In this way they form a contrast to the wide landscape in which they stand.

history

The founder of the Katzow Sculpture Park is the sculptor Thomas Radeloff , who in 1991 put his first three figures on the meadow. In 1992 the 1st International Sculpture Workshop took place, which from then on became the program and annually enriched the Sculpture Park with several sculptures by domestic and foreign artists. In 1993, the Association for the Promotion of Sculpture Park Katzow e. V. and started building the art barn in 1994 , which was inaugurated in 1995 with the final exhibition of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania cultural summer.

The art barn of the Katzow Sculpture Park was created from a barn around 20 km from the village. This was dismantled and rebuilt in Katzow as a half-timbered building until 1997. Thanks to the use of the oak beams and the existing bricks, their originality was retained. Planned as a workshop for the sculptor's workshop and exhibition hall, the dimensions were changed according to the new purpose. The art barn has, among other things, 600 m² of exhibition space, a workshop, a hall-like gallery with an open roof , in which five exhibitions were held each year. There was also a gallery café with an artist library and a shop. There are four artist-designed guest rooms, u. a. by Klaus Duschat and David Lee Thompson . In front of the art barn stands the large TAM TAM by Joseph Bongmene.

The annual international sculpture workshop made the Katzow Sculpture Park known across national borders. In 1996, in Skulpture , an American art magazine for sculptures, the Katzow Sculpture Park was the only one of the eight German sculpture parks mentioned to be given an image. The artists came to Katzow from Taiwan, the USA, Peru and the South Pacific island of Vanuatu . In 2012, after more than 130 exhibitions, the exhibition was ended for personal and financial reasons. Nevertheless, the 20th international sculpture workshop took place a year later. While the café is closed in 2018, the park is still available to visitors. The art barn can be booked for overnight stays.
