To the west of Lüngerau is the smaller Lindewitt about 1.3 kilometers away. Grossenwiehe is located about five hundred meters east of Lüngerau. Sillerup is two kilometers south. background

The place name is first documented in writing in 1352. It is made up of dan. lyng for heather and vrå for corner or angle with the corresponding meaning corner in heather . In Danish, the place name was also given as Lyngraa (Heideau). When adopted into German, the final aa or å was interpreted as Au .

Lüngerau was already listed as a larger village on the maps of the Danish land survey of 1857/1858 and the Prussian land survey .

In 1974, the community of Lindewitt-Lüngerau (which essentially consisted of Lindewitt and Lüngerau) merged with the communities of Kleinwiehe, Linnau, Riesbriek and Sillerup. Today's large community of Lindewitt was created.

Legend of bacon and bride from Lüngerau

Once a piece of bacon got stuck in the bride's throat at a wedding celebration in a house in Lüngerau and she is said to have died from it. She was buried in her bridal gown with everything on. She had been adorned with a lot of gold and silver for the wedding. Two thieves decided to dig up the body again in order to rob her. They opened the grave and stole all jewelry from the bride. When loosening the magnificent belt, they had to lift the bride. When they dropped it back into the coffin, the piece of bacon came off and the bride woke up. She woke the pastor who brought her back to Lüngerau.

The legend is reminiscent of the fairy tale of Snow White and is therefore also classified as a fairy tale.
