Roland Bauer
Roland Bauer (born March 19, 1928 in Eibenberg , Czechoslovakia ; † 2017 ) was a German historian, functionary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and politician in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He was a professor at the SED party college "Karl Marx" , Vice President of the Historians' Society of the GDR , a member of the Berlin City Council and the Central Committee (ZK) of the SED . In 1976 he was involved in Wolf Biermann's expatriation . In 1991 he resigned from the SED successor party, the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS).
Life
After attending grammar school, the worker's son Roland Bauer learned the trade of watchmaker , jeweler and optician by 1944 . Bauer's parents were members of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and lived in Grünberg , now a part of Kraslice . From 1934 to 1938, Bauer was a member of the communist pioneer organization. In 1944/45 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service . His father was a concentration camp prisoner first in the Dachau concentration camp and later in the Mauthausen concentration camp .
After the end of the Second World War , Bauer and his parents left Czechoslovakia. They moved to the Soviet occupation zone in Germany, near Weimar . Bauer became a member of the Free German Youth (FDJ) and joined the SED in August 1946. He worked as a watchmaker in Apolda until 1947 , where he took on leading positions in the FDJ. In 1947 he completed a course at the SED state party school in Thuringia in Bad Berka and was youth secretary of the SED district leadership in Weimar from 1947 to 1949.
In 1949 Bauer attended the party college "Karl Marx" for the second two-year course and then worked as an assistant, later a lecturer and deputy head of the history department . From 1954 to 1958 he completed a postgraduate course at the Institute of Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the CPSU in Moscow and was with the work requirements and principles of the November Revolution 1918 in Germany (Stage 1) to Dr. phil. PhD . From 1958 to 1962 Bauer was an employee of the management and then deputy director of the SED party college "Karl Marx".
From 1962 to 1964 Bauer - as successor to Ludwig Einicke - was director of the Institute for Marxism-Leninism at the Central Committee of the SED and from 1962 to 1964 Vice-President of the GDR Historians' Society. From 1964 to 1967, Bauer was secretary for agitation and propaganda in the SED district leadership in Berlin and replaced Erich Selbmann as head of the SED's ideological commission. From 1967 to 1978, Bauer was secretary for science, popular education and culture in the SED district leadership in Berlin. He was replaced on June 12, 1978 by Horst Oswald .
From 1967 to 1971 Bauer was a candidate and since the Eighth Party Congress of the SED in 1971 he was also a member of the Central Committee of the SED. From 1971 to 1978 he was a member of the culture commission of the Central Committee and from 1971 to 1981 also a member of the Berlin city council. In 1976 he was involved in the expatriation of Wolf Biermann.
From 1978 to 1989 Bauer - as the successor to Rudolf Wettengel - was a representative of the Central Committee of the SED in the editorial team of the magazine Problems of Peace and Socialism in Prague . There he was a member of the editorial team and representative of the SED and later the PDS until 1990.
In May 1991 Bauer resigned from the PDS. He has been retired since August 1990. Later he worked for Wolfgang Harich's Alternative Enquete Commission on GDR history . Bauer lives in Berlin.
