The medal of merit of the organs of the Ministry of the Interior was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The medal was donated on June 15, 1966 in three stages; Bronze, silver and gold. They were awarded for merit and personal commitment to increasing public order and security. Also for the protection of the development of socialism in the GDR as well as the consolidation of the German People's Police and the Ministry of the Interior . The award could be made to individuals as well as collectives, whereby multiple awards, even at the same level, were expressly possible.

Appearance and wearing style

The bronze , silver-plated or gold-plated medal with a diameter of 34.5 mm shows a police star with a central GDR coat of arms on its obverse . Below are two oak leaves tied together, pointing to the right and left and following the medal round about 1/4. This is followed by the inscription: FOR OUTSTANDING MERIT , which together with the oak leaves form a whole circle. The reverse of the medal, on the other hand, shows the state coat of arms of the GDR in the middle, which is surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves, which, starting from below, is shown tied together and bent open at the top. The medal was worn on a pentagonal green 24 mm wide clasp, in the middle of which a 5 mm wide vertical black, red and gold central stripe is woven, on the left upper side of the chest. The tape is lined on both sides by a 1.5 mm wide red stripe. With the award of the silver and gold level, a 1.5 mm wide silver or gold stripe is also integrated on the band 3 mm from the hem. The interim clasp was the same as the ribbon.
