Martin Wetzel

Martin Wetzel (born December 17, 1929 in Schönebeck (Elbe) , † September 11, 2008 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German sculptor and graphic artist .

Live and act

Martin Wetzel first learned the profession of stove fitter and worked as a modeller until 1952. After studying at the Burg Giebichenstein Art Academy (from 1952 to 1958) in Halle (Saale) with Gustav Weidanz , he began teaching at the Burg in 1959 and was head of the ceramics department from 1974 and professor from 1975 to 1994. Renée Reichenbach was one of his students .

In Halle (Saale) alone , over ten works of art created by Martin Wetzel were displayed. Most of them are bronze sculptures and bronze reliefs. In 1994 the land reform memorial in Merseburg (West) was demolished. The victims of vandalism were father and son (sawed off their legs in July 2007 and thrown into the bushes) and the lovers (knocked over in May 2007) in Halle (Saale). Both sculptures were put up again in 2009. Most of his works are in Halle, Rostock, Dessau and Chemnitz

In 1965 he was awarded the Handel Prize of the Halle district . In 1978 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze and in 1984 in gold.
