The Rostock Schnickmann street is a street in the historic center of the Hanseatic city and part of the former New Town .

It owes its name to the Rostock patrician family of the Schnickmanns. Via it and the directly adjoining Breite Straße you once got from the Strande (the city harbor on the Unterwarnow ) to the Hopfenmarkt (today's Universitätsplatz ). At the northern end of Schnickmannstrasse stood the Gothic gate of the same name . Because of its proximity to the city's second most important trading center after the Neuer Markt , it was surrounded by gabled houses, the facades of which were changed in the 19th and 20th centuries according to contemporary tastes.

During the Second World War it was badly destroyed in the northern section by the four-night bombardment by the British Air Force at the end of 1942, but most of the development survived the war. However, the existing building fabric was left to decay until the 1970s, so that from 1978 onwards, almost without exception, the old buildings had to be subjected to a so-called “area renovation”, ie a complete demolition.

Only the Wittesche Speicher from the late 18th century on the east side of the street has been restored. Instead of the old buildings, houses were built in the so-called modified panel construction , which are similar in size and shape to the historical models, while Schnickmannstraße was converted into a pedestrian zone. In the middle of the street there is a small, man-made watercourse.
