Location of Südstadt in Rostock
|
The Südstadt is a district of Rostock .
Emergence
With the Südstadt between 1961 and 1965, Rostock's first uniform large housing estate was built in prefabricated construction with 7917 apartments for around 20,000 people. With the exception of the Südring (formerly: Otto-Grotewohl -Ring), Erich-Schlesinger- Strasse , Majakowski- Strasse and Erich-Weinert- Strasse , the streets in Südstadt are named after scientists.
buildings
In the southern part of the city there are some facilities of the University of Rostock , such as the departments of biology and chemistry, the faculty for mechanical engineering and ship technology , parts of the faculty for computer science and electrical engineering, the (large) cafeteria , the Rostock university library , the computer center and several student dormitories . In 2015 the institute building for physics and the research building Life, Light & Matter were inaugurated, so that the university is continuing the expansion of the Südstadtcampus to the " MINT- Campus".
Nevertheless, the Südstadt is a district with a high average age. With the exception of the students in some dormitories, the southern part of the city is mostly inhabited by people who have lived here since the first time in the early 1960s. The Südstadt is therefore a rather quiet district.
The former restaurant "Kosmos" (like the "Teepott" in Warnemünde, a hypar shell building ) is, together with the Südstadt-Center, which opened in 1993, the central element of the Südstadt. The Südstadt-Klinikum, a Fraunhofer Institute, the Rostock city hall and the central bus station southeast of the main train station are also characteristic of the Südstadt .
In 2003, the Rostock tram network was expanded to the southern part of the city, which has now become closer to the center. This is one of the reasons why the Südstadt is one of the fastest growing districts of Rostock. Many more apartments are to be built in the next few years, for example at the cafeteria, on Grooten Pohl or between Max-Planck-Straße and Albert-Einstein-Straße. The plans for the neighboring Groß-Biestow district have meanwhile been dashed again.
