Location of Wiethagen in Rostock

Wiethagen is a district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock on the southern edge of the Rostock Heath .

Geographical location

Wiethagen is located about 15 km north-northeast of the historic core of the city of Rostock. The adjacent areas to the west of the district are used for agriculture, to the south the town of Rövershagen begins after just 100 meters of road and in the east and north direction heathland, forest and agricultural areas alternate. The place and the surrounding area are about eight meters above sea level .

The Meyershausstelle property belongs to Wiethagen , about three kilometers northeast of the village. The former forester's house is used as a house and restaurant.

history

Map of the Rostock Heath from 1912

Wiethagen probably came into being in the middle of the 18th century when the farmers in Oberhagen and Niederhagen were laid down to build two estates . Away from the towns, two poor cottages were built for the now landless farmers, from which Wiethagen emerged. In 1769 Wiethagen appears for the first time on a map of the Rostock Heath. The forest inspector Becker reports in the Chronicle of Rövershagen about the tragic death of the forest inspector Möller in 1780 at the Wiethagen forest farm. In 1835 Wiethagen consisted of the homesteads of a sawmaker and a tree-keeper , the hunter's estate and the "Discherkaten" (carpenter's house), in which five Bönhasen (to the displeasure of the Rostock craftsmen) ran their trade. The oldest building in the village today is the wooden warehouse built in 1825. When the railway line came to Rövershagen in 1889, it was useless as a wood store and was set up as a residence for the widows and daughters of deceased forest officials.

Near Wiethagen there was a 60 hectare infantry firing range that was laid out in GDR times and was used by the military until 2000 (the associated security zone = restricted area was 1120 hectares in size). As part of EU-funded measures, the buildings were demolished and the areas renatured to forest and heather.

Wiethagen was incorporated into Rostock in 1924 and is now part of Rostock Local Office 1.

Museum Forst- und Köhlerhof

There has been a tar smeltery in Wiethagen since 1837, in which up to eight charcoal burners in double-walled ovens produced not only charcoal but also wood tar and turpentine . The Köhlerhaus and the two tar ovens were declared a technical monument in 1984 and reconstructed in the years up to 1989. Since 1991, a sponsoring association has been directing and managing museum operations and the expansion and maintenance of the facilities in the forest and Köhlerhof Wiethagen . In May 2009 the 7th European Koehler Meeting took place here with 130 participants.
