The northern old town in Rostock is part of the modern urban structure of the Hanseatic city and belongs to the district Stadtmitte . The term Northern Old Town refers to the area north of Langen Strasse and south of the city harbor on the Unterwarnow . The northern old town is bounded by the Fischerbastion in the west and by Grubenstrasse in the east.

Today's northern old town must not be confused with the historic Rostock old town , the area between Grubenstrasse and the eastern city wall (see also: eastern old town ).

In the northern old town are the streets leading to the port , which were so important in Hanseatic times, such as Lagerstraße and Wokrenterstraße , as well as the side streets connecting them. In the historical context, this urban area belongs to the Neustadt in the west and the Mittelstadt in the east. The Lagerstraße is the border of these former suburbs.

The Lange Straße, which was rebuilt as a monumental socialist thoroughfare between 1953 and 1960 after severe war destruction, was pushed like a bolt in front of today's northern old town, as the connections between Langer Straße and the streets of the northern old town are largely blocked or only passable for pedestrians through breaches in the wall were. The same applies to the connections to Kröpeliner Straße in the south.

As a result of this constriction of the northern old town from the communal organism, its historical building fabric deteriorated. In 1978 the "area renovation" began, demolishing the houses between Fischerstrasse and Wokrenterstrasse. The new construction then took place with houses in the so-called modified panel construction . The height and shape of these houses should be based on Hanseatic gabled houses. On the east side of Wokrenterstraße, however, a row of gabled houses was built in a historicizing form. In the street Burgwall and in the Lagerstraße, the historical structure of the buildings has been largely preserved despite the losses in the southern sections; in the case of Koßfelderstraße, this only applies to a short section of this street in the north.

In addition to its function as a popular residential area, there are also small businesses and restaurants in the northern old town.
