Helmut Himmelsbach (born April 16, 1946 in Oberndorf am Neckar ) is a German non-party local politician . From 1999 to the end of April 2014 he was Lord Mayor of the city of Heilbronn , and since 2000 he has been chairman of the Heilbronn-Franken regional association and the Heilbronn-Franken economic region .

Life

Himmelsbach completed an apprenticeship as a graduate in administration and business administration . From 1970 to 1975 he was the head of the Bietigheim City Treasury , where he held the office of First Mayor from 1975 to 1993. Afterwards he was Lord Mayor of Heidenheim an der Brenz until 1999 . In 1999 he ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Heilbronn, which he took up after winning the election on September 15, 1999 as the successor to Manfred Weinmann .

On June 17, 2007, Himmelsbach ran again for the office of Lord Mayor in Heilbronn. The candidacy of the non-party Himmelsbach was supported by the CDU, the SPD, the FDP and the free voters. He won the election with 68.0% of the vote, but the turnout was only 31.6%. His second term of office lasted not eight, but only seven years until 2014, when Himmelsbach turned 68. Harry Mergel was elected as his successor .

Awards

In 2011 Himmelsbach was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg . On April 29, 2014, he was made an honorary citizen of Heilbronn as part of his farewell mayor .
