history

Originally the road from Havelberg to Sandau led across the island . After Havelberg there was a connection over the Sandauer-Zug-Bridge to the Sandauer Tor . There was another bridge in the direction of Sandau. On a map from 1799, the island is referred to as Pale Gardens . In 1844 a road was built and the road layout changed. The road to Sandau now led over a new Sandau bridge built a little further to the east . The island lost its previously given traffic importance.

Later, a warehouse for petroleum was built on the island , from which the current name of the island results. The city map from 1893 shows the oil depot on the island and also shows a bridge leading south from the island.

In 1934 the Havelberg lock was built nearby . The Havelarm, which ran south along the Petroleum Island, was filled in, so that the island was now connected to the mainland.

As part of the Federal Garden Show 2015 one was restoration of the old Havelarms performed. The island regained its island character, but the current island is somewhat smaller than the one that originally existed. Buildings on the island that were ready to be demolished were removed and the island renatured. Until 2013 there was also a residential building on the island. Construction work began on January 20, 2014. South of the island, the House of Rivers was built , to which a footbridge leads again.
