The Friedenswarte is a lookout tower on the Marienberg in Brandenburg an der Havel . It is located in the center of the city, is a landmark that can be seen from afar and is a listed building .

history

The Brandenburg toy manufacturer Ernst Paul Lehmann initiated the construction of a Bismarck station on the Marienberg in the middle of a large urban park. The plans for the control room came from Bruno Möhring . The foundation stone was laid on April 1, 1905, and exactly three years later, on April 1, 1908, the approximately thirty meter high tower was opened together with a newly designed southern staircase. The tower consisted of a core made of clinker brick, while the exterior was designed with granite boulders . In one of the interior there was a hall with a fire bowl, which was lit on festive occasions. The glow of the fire was visible from afar. A staircase led to a viewing platform. A bust of Otto von Bismarck created by Hugo Lederer was set in a niche on the front of the pedestal facing the staircase .

On August 31, 1958, the Bismarckwarte was renamed the Friedenswarte by a resolution of the city council . In the resolution of the city council on August 28, 1958 it said:

“The permanent commission“ Art and cultural mass work ”of the city council and the culture department called on the population of our city to submit suitable proposals for renaming the observation tower on the Marienberg. Of the 21 suggestions received from the population and the district peace council, 18 votes in favor of the name “Friedenswarte”. On the basis of the discussions with the district peace council and the permanent commission for “art and cultural mass work”, the city council decided to rename the observation tower on the Marienberg the “Friedenswarte”. The name will be given on the evening before World Day of Peace, August 31. 1958 at 7 p.m. by the Lord Mayor on the Marienberg. "

In connection with the renaming, the niche with the bust of Bismarck was closed and covered by a relief plate by the sculptor Karl Mertens , the dove of peace .

1974 to 1975 the park on the Marienberg was redesigned to a 22 hectare "Park of Culture and Recreation". For example, a military cemetery that had existed since 1941 was removed in this context . On March 22, 1974, the former Bismarck Observatory, which had been closed for two years, was blown up and removed down to a base made of field stones.

Staircase: separate stairs for the ascent (here still green, now black) and descent (red)

A new tower was then erected on the field stone base within six months. It was completed on the 25th anniversary of the founding of the GDR on October 7, 1974. The architects of the building were Günter Franke and Wolfgang Schoppe .

Today's Friedenswarte is 32.5 m high and consists essentially of a round concrete tower shaft with an outer diameter of 4.8 m, which houses the staircase. For ascent and descent, there are two separate spiral staircases inside, arranged in the form of a double helix , each with 180 steps. The ascent on the black staircase is clockwise, the exit on the red staircase is counterclockwise.

From a height of 7.5 m, the tower is surrounded alternately by five closed and five open viewing platforms clad with chrome-nickel steel and glass and with these has a diameter of 8 m. The distance between the platforms is 2.5 m, the top, open platform is at a height of 30 m.
