coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver, a striding, looking red lynx over a diagonal, double blue- grafted red shield base ."
The coat of arms was designed by the municipal heraldist Jörg Mantzsch in 2014 and approved by the Brandenburg State Archives on April 15, 2014, following a decision by the municipal council on March 6, 2014. With its symbolism, it ties in with the place name. The term “place of a rys” or “place where lynxes occur” is derived from the old Polish basic form Rys'ov. If a personal name is adopted, it is derived from rys = lynx (cf. Old Polish personal name Rys, old Czech Rys or Old Russian personal name Rysik). This root can still be found in the Slavic languages today (lynx = pысь / ru., Ryś / Polish, pись / uk, Pис / bul.). Furthermore, the adjectives derived from "rys" also have the meaning Sorbian rysy = fox red, Czech rysý = reddish. *) This derivation explains the Retzow coat of arms with the symbol of a lynx, which is carried in red on a silver shield - in addition to the historical coincidence of the name, traditional Brandenburg colors.
A special feature is the geography of the municipality, which is characterized by a continuous ascent / descent (over 8 meters); In addition, the place has two ponds that have an inflow and outflow. For this reason, the base of the shield was bevelled to the right and grafted blue twice. The so-called grafts are symbolic of the two ponds in Retzow.
The colors of the community are: red and white
flag
The flag has two stripes in the colors red and white with the coat of arms in the middle.
Attractions
The list of monuments in Retzow includes the monuments entered in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg.
- Late Gothic church, a brick building from around 1500 in two sections
- Bredow's manor house, built in a country house style
Today's “manorial house” was approved as a new building in 1870 by the district administrator of the Westhavelland district instead of the previous building .
The manor house was built in the tradition of the late classical style as a simple two-story plastered building with a gable roof .
In the period from 1900 to 1909, the then owner Ernst von Bredow (1865–1909) had the house on the street front extended in the style of historicism with neo-baroque elements. The center of the facade was given a tower-like porch with a grooved base, which extended over two floors and was crowned by an oversized helmet with a lantern.
In the years that followed, the mansion was transformed again in terms of its structural structure and its use. The tower-like porch with its roof structure was removed and thus almost returned to its original shape from 1870. Its use changed from a residential building to a school building, today it sleeps a deep sleep and is waiting to be used again.
