The nature reserve Untere Havel Süd is a nature reserve in the state of Brandenburg . The protected area had been in the process since 1994. The ordinance for the nature reserve came into force on August 3, 2009. It extends along the Lower Havel between the cities of Rathenow in the north and Havelsee including the Pritzerber See in the south.

Nature reserve

The nature reserve Untere Havel Süd covers an area of 3933 hectares. It is a breeding and resting area for waders and water birds. Examples of occurring bird species are mute swan , whooper swan , dwarf swan , bittern , kingfisher , red backed swan . Furthermore, sea eagles , ruff , white stork , redshank , curlew , red kite and black kite live in the river plains. Up to 90,000 white-fronted geese and bean geese rest on the Lower Havel on their way to northern breeding areas . In addition to the large number of native and migrating bird species, beavers and otters , grass snakes , moor frogs , crested newts and natterjack toads live in large numbers in the protected area. There are also rare plant species such as cornflower , swamp milkweed , swamp flat pea and God's mercy herb .

The nature reserve Untere Havel Süd is part of the nature park Westhavelland , the landscape protection area Westhavelland, the SPA area (European bird sanctuary) Lower Havel and the FFH area Lower Havel / Gülper See.
