The Rietzer See nature reserve is a 1,133.6 hectare nature reserve (NSG) in the state of Brandenburg . The area has been a bird sanctuary since 1997 and a nature reserve since 2000.
location
The nature reserve is one of the European bird sanctuaries and consists of the Netzener See , the Rietzer See with the moor lake and an intermediate lowland called Streng . The Emster Canal connects Rietzer and Netzener See.
The nature reserve is located in the municipality of Kloster Lehnin about six kilometers southeast of the city of Brandenburg an der Havel and about 24 kilometers west of Potsdam . The federal highway 1 and the Berlin – Magdeburg railway line run north of the area and the federal freeway 2 runs southward in an east-west direction. Federal highway 102 runs to the west in a north-south direction, and to the east is county road 6940.
The area, starting clockwise from the villages of north Gollwitz , Jeserig , Schenkenberg , Trechwitz , Damsdorf , Nahmitz , networks , Grebs , Prützke , Schmerzke , Neuschmerzke and Wust surrounded.
The northern route of the Bernhardsweg to and from Lehnin leads through the protected area in the southern part of the Streng.

Rietzer See
The heart of the nature reserve is the Rietzer See with an area of around 3.24 square kilometers (depending on the water level and other sources 3.21 square kilometers or 3.27 square kilometers) including the adjacent moor lake in the northeast. The lake lies in the districts of Rietz , Schenkenberg , Trechwitz and Damsdorf .
Strict
In the southwest area of the Streng there is an observation tower from which the entire Streng can be observed.
Netzener See
Near the village of Netzen there is a bird watching tower on the lake. Sports boats with internal combustion engines are prohibited from driving between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. The area is one of the ornithologically most important breeding and resting areas in Brandenburg.

Birds
It is one of the most important breeding and resting areas for birds in the state of Brandenburg. The development of bird populations has been closely monitored in this area since 1959. Around 270 bird species have been identified so far, with around 160 species being found in the area as breeding birds . These include kingfisher , reed warbler , white stork , teal , red kite , bittern and bittern .
The Rietzer See and the adjacent area is a transit area for geese, waders and birds of prey. The white-tailed eagle can now be observed all year round.
In the meantime, the canalised wet meadows on the Streng have become a resting and sleeping place for cranes .
Other animal species
Beavers have been around since 2006 . The repeated sighting of the shy otters should be emphasized .
Since 2008, water buffalos have grazed a salt marsh near Schenkenberg .
flora
Particularly noteworthy are the so-called inland salt areas with their typical salt flora and the small areas of dry limestone lawns on the lake shore. Among the protected species include the Bogbean , the swamp orchid , the Strandtausendgüldenkraut and the splendor Elke .
On the Holzberg near Rietz there is valuable dry sand grass .
