2005
Players qualified in 2005 by finishing in the top 18 spots in a WSOP circuit tournament held prior to the 2005 WSOP or by reaching the final table at the 2005 WSOP Main Event . Controversy arose when prominent players Phil Hellmuth , Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan - former main event winners and the most braceleted players at the WSOP - were given the opportunity to enter the Tournament of Champions without qualifying . These players were given free sponsorship seats by Pepsi who provided the $ 2 million prize. Despite public protests from other players, particularly Daniel Negreanu and Paul Phillips , ESPN and Harrah's Entertainment had to let the players participate.
The event was played at Caesars Palace from November 6-8, 2005 . 114 players took part.
