The Seulbach is a brook in the state of Hesse , Germany . Apart from 600 meters in the Bad Homburg district , it only flows in the area of the city of Friedrichsdorf , primarily Seulberg . Its source is on the Taunushang west of the district of Dillingen . It flows into the Erlenbach after 4.7 km .

Surname

The name comes from Seulberg itself, which in turn derives from the column castle or "Suleburc" and refers to the remains of the villa rustica , a Roman manor house. Whether the part of the name Seul comes from Seuel = ahle, pfrieme, Middle High German siuwele has not been proven. The Seulbach, named after the desert of the same name in the headwaters , was previously called Wilkomshauser Bach.

geography

course

The flow area of the Seulbach is characterized by agricultural areas, the fertilization of which in spring often leads to algal blooms . The stream flows through the "Bottigtal" (presumably from Bottich  = container), which is an important fresh air corridor for Seulberg.

source

The source, called Geisborn , is located in the Seulberg Forest and is used for drinking water. The water there has a very high iron content . After only a few meters, the stream is fed by a summer-dry tributary. These are several streams that arise in the forest north of Friedrichsdorf, especially the Rehlingsbach , whose water is directed southwest of Friedrichsdorf into the Seulbach for flood protection in the event of large outflows. A few meters further on the Seulbach there is a small fish pond . In summer , the pond does not leave water, so the lower part of the creek falls dry. Now the crossing under the former B 455 follows . The pipe cross-section was deliberately chosen to be small, so that floodwater is retained above the road that functions as a dam and the area of the site functions as a retention basin .

A drainage introduction with the former beginning of a piping

Behind the road, past former dams, drainage water is directed from the meadows into the stream that now runs through meadows . In summer the stream is often only filled with water again from here. Several remains of dams as well as piping in the further course suggest that the stream was partially diverted and piped several times from its original stream bed. The roots of the trees standing by the brook have resulted in several deeper spots ( scouring ) being created here.

Another stream comes out of the Hardtwald behind the small wood . From here the Seulbach now flows in a concrete channel . This was created to protect the agricultural areas from natural erosion and to divert the stream. Directly behind the pumping station , the extraction of which lowers the groundwater for the drinking water , the stream flows again in a natural bed, but not at the lowest point of the valley, which it only reaches again near the primary school in an S-curve following the course of the farm roads. Further in the direction of Seulberg, at the mouth of another stream from the drainage systems of the sports fields, another concrete channel began, which was removed in 2013.

Even before the railway line is crossed, Berliner Strasse runs on a kind of embankment . The pipe was also chosen to be very small here, and an inlet structure was built on the street . Due to the rise in terrain on the sides, this area also serves as a retention basin, and a small lake is usually created during flooding.

On the one hand, in order to remove the brook polluted with sewage from the townscape, on the other hand, by developing the residential area between the railway line and the old town center, the Seulbach was laid in pipes in the 1950s . Only after crossing under the Alt Seulberg street does the Seulbach come back into daylight to run parallel to Grabenstraße in a large concrete channel.

The creek at the end of the concrete channel has renatured itself through an overturned willow . Another brook flows a few hundred meters downstream. This is a confluence of the Rehlingsbach and the Schnepfenbach , which comes from Friedrichsdorf. Now in the Bad Homburg area, after crossing under the A 5 , it flows in the "Lohwald" into the Erlenbach.

Nidda river system

fauna

The population of sticklebacks in several sections is remarkable for the stream . The fish live in deeper places that do not dry out in summer. They differ from the animals found in the Erlenbach, for example, in their color: the males in courtship are not colored red with dark blue eyes, but almost orange with light blue eyes. The basic color is also not silvery with green-gray spots, but rather medium gray spots. The fish find food in abundance in the form of mosquito larvae or river fleas .
