Pillai learned to play poker from friends. He has participated in renowned live tournaments since 2007 .

Pillai won the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas for the first time in mid-June 2007 . He sat down at a tournament variant No-Limit Hold'em against 826 other players through and secured bracelet and a prize money of nearly 530,000 US dollars . In 2011 he made the money three times and in 2012 five times in WSOP tournaments. He reached a final table at the 2016 WSOP and finished in third place, worth nearly $ 200,000. The American then also made it into the money at the main event of the tournament series and received almost 70,000 US dollars for his 86th place. In mid-August 2017, he finished second at the Big Stax 500 in Bensalem and secured just under 80,000 US dollars due to a deal with two other players. At the Main Event of the World Poker Tour (WPT) in October 2017, Pillai finished in sixth place in Jacksonville , which was paid for with around 55,000 US dollars. At the end of September 2018, he finished second at the WPT Main Event in Hanover , Maryland , and received around $ 220,000. At the 2019 WSOP , Pillai won an event open only to bracelet winners, where he secured his second bracelet and the grand prize of over $ 70,000. In August 2020, he took third place at the Poker Players Championship of the World Series of Poker Online, which was played out on GGPoker due to the COVID-19 pandemic , which was worth almost one million US dollars.
