Philipp Alexander "Phil" Gruissem (born January 30, 1987 in Krefeld ) is a professional German poker player .

Personal

Gruissem comes from Krefeld . He studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen . Gruissem lived for a time in London and now in Malta . Together with Liv Boeree and Igor Kurganow , he founded the charity project Raising for Effective Giving, which is based on the principles of effective altruism , in early July 2014 .

Poker career

Career

Gruissem has been playing online on the platforms PokerStars , Full Tilt Poker and partypoker under the nickname philbort since July 2007 . At the 2017 World Championship of Online Poker , he won a tournament on PokerStars with a prize money of around 75,000 US dollars . Overall, he has online tournament winnings of over $ 3.5 million. Gruissem now belongs to the partypoker team and uses the nickname phil_gruissem there . Since 2009 he has also been taking part in renowned live tournaments.

In July 2011 he was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and reached the 28th place out of 6865 players at the main event . He was the second best German behind the winner Pius Heinz and won prize money of over 240,000 US dollars. At the end of August 2011, Gruissem won a tournament on the European Poker Tour (EPT) in Barcelona with a prize money of 234,500 euros . About a month later, he also won the EPT high roller event in London, collecting the equivalent of around 700,000 US dollars. In mid-April 2013 , Gruissem won the high roller tournament of the World Series of Poker Asia Pacific in Melbourne . But he prevailed against 43 other players, but received no bracelet for the victory, as the event was not on the regular tournament schedule . At the end of October 2013 he secured victory at the Alpha8 event as part of the World Poker Tour in London with prize money equivalent to just under 1.4 million US dollars. Less than three weeks later, he also won the Alpha8 on St. Kitts for another $ 1.1 million. At the beginning of May 2014 Gruissem was successful at the high roller event as part of the EPT Grand Final in Monte-Carlo and received prize money of almost one million euros for the victory. At the beginning of May 2017 he won the Eight Max Shot Clock of the PokerStars Championship in Monte-Carlo and received a prize of almost 500,000 euros.

In total, Gruissem has earned more than 11.5 million US dollars with poker in live tournaments , making him one of the most successful German poker players . From April to December 2016 Gruissem acted as manager of the Berlin Bears in the Global Poker League and reached the final with his team.
