Freshmen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freshmen (including freshmen , freshmen (Niederhessen), Ersties / Erstis , Ersi / Ersis (Hanover), Quietschies (occasionally in southern Germany)) are students who are enrolled in their degree program in the first (specialist) semester .

Since freshmen usually come to a foreign city to the university , college of education or technical college immediately after their Abitur or Matura , they are still inexperienced in many things. For this reason, many universities offer special introductory programs for freshmen. These introductory programs (sometimes also called "O-phase" or "orientation phase", "O-week" or "orientation week" or "orientation units " or "start-up days") can be game evenings , parties, city rallies , special lectures or tutor programs. These events are intended to make it easier for freshmen to start their studies and give them the opportunity to get used to their new surroundings more quickly. They are mostly organized by the relevant student councils or faculties , but also by recruiting student associations, who often advise pupils and prospective students and offer them information material.

In the winter semester 2010/2011, 440,000 new students were enrolled at the universities, in 2013/2014 the previous high of 506,600 freshmen was reached, in the winter semester 2014/2015 there were again slightly fewer new students at 498,900.
