Kelly Julia Minkin (born March 29, 1987 in Waukesha , Wisconsin ) is a professional American poker player .

Personal

Minkin grew up in Milwaukee and moved to Phoenix with her parents and two brothers when she was eight . She attended the University of Arizona at Tucson and graduated in molecular biology and cell biology in 2010 . She then enrolled at the Arizona Summit Law School and graduated with a law degree in 2014 . Minkin then worked for the law firm Kent & Wittekind, PC in Phoenix.

Poker career

Minkin occasionally visited the local casino with her then-boyfriend while she was in college . When he began to be more interested in basketball , Minkin regularly went to the casino alone and slowly played his way up during the stakes. In August 2013, Minkin played her first live tournament, the Arizona State Poker Championship in Scottsdale , after her father encouraged her to do so. There she finished second out of 1299 players and received prize money of over 150,000 US dollars .

From then on, Minkin often played regional poker tournaments . In January 2015, she won a tournament as part of the LA Poker Classic in Los Angeles with a prize money of around 55,000 US dollars. Just a week later, she made the final table at the World Poker Tour (WPT) main event in Hollywood , Florida , finishing the tournament in third place for over $ 260,000 in prize money, the highest of her poker career to date. In June 2015 she was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and initially cashed in three tournaments in the No Limit Hold'em variant . In July 2015 , she played the WSOP Main Event with a buy-in of $ 10,000. There she reached the sixth day of the tournament and was eliminated as the best woman in 29th place. For this she received prize money of around 210,000 US dollars. In the ranking of the Global Poker Index Player of the Year 2015 , Minkin came in 250th as the best woman at the end of the year and therefore received the award of GPI Female Player of the Year at the American Poker Awards in Beverly Hills at the end of February 2016 . In mid-December 2017, Minkin took third place at the main event of the WSOP circuit in Los Angeles for almost 100,000 US dollars in prize money. She reached her first WSOP final table at the 2018 WSOP and finished ninth with Loni Harwood and Haixia Zhang at the tag team event for a shared prize pool of $ 12,700. Two weeks later, Minkin was the only woman to reach the sixth day of the tournament in the main event , finishing in 50th place for more than 150,000 US dollars. At the end of October 2018, she finished third at the WPT Main Event in Jacksonville and received just under $ 150,000 in prize money.

In total, Minkin has earned more than $ 1.5 million in poker playing live tournaments. She can also be seen regularly on the US TV format Poker After Dark .
