Martin Staszko (born June 22, 1976 in Třinec ) is a professional Czech poker player .

Personal

Staszko's father worked at the Třinec iron and steel works, and his mother was a pharmacist . At his school, Martin Staszko held the records in long jump and cross-country skiing for 15 years . He later studied at the Technical University in Ostrava , where he won the darts championship. Staszko played the card game Mariáš, popular in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and professionally chess from 1998 to 2006 . He reached a skill level of up to 2086 Elo . He worked at Hyundai as a vehicle painter , but gave up the job for his poker career. Staszko lives in Třinec.

Poker career

Staszko started playing online poker under the nickname filfedra in 2007 after watching a European Poker Tour (EPT) event on television. He improved his game by reading poker books. 2008 and 2011 earned Staszko more than 200,000 US dollars on the platform PokerStars .

In January 2010, he was also successful for the first time at a renowned live tournament and came eleventh at the EPT Main Event in Deauville, France, for 35,000 euros in prize money. In the summer of 2011 he played at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas and already placed four times in the money before he took part in the main event from July 7, 2011 as one of 6,865 players . There Staszko was the first Czech to reach the final table with the largest chip stack , which was played on November 8, 2011. Staszko landed there after the final heads-up against the German Pius Heinz in second place and received prize money of almost 5.5 million dollars.

Since this success, Staszko has been playing regularly at the WSOP and now has 42 cash placements. At the beginning of December 2015, he took second place at the main event of the Eureka Poker Tour in Prague for more than 170,000 euros in prize money.

In total, Staszko has earned more than six million dollars with poker in live tournaments, making him the second most successful Czech poker player after Martin Kabrhel .
