Warkowytschi ( Ukrainian Варковичі ; Russian Варковичи Warkowitschi , Polish Warkowicze ) is a village in the south of the Ukrainian Rivne Oblast with about 1750 inhabitants (2001).
Varkowytschi is the administrative center of the 40.137 km² district council of the same name in the east of Dubno Rajon , to which the villages Zelenyj Haj ( Зелений Гай , ⊙ ) with about 250 inhabitants and Kryliw ( Крилів , ⊙ ) with about 400 inhabitants belong.
geography
The location situated at an altitude of 218 m on the banks of Stubla ( Стубла ), a 62-km long, right tributary of Styr , 17 km northeast of the Rajonzentrum Dubno and 30km sudwestlich from Oblastzentrum Riwne . The M 06 / E 40 road runs north of the village .
history
The village, first mentioned in writing in 1545, had 102 farms in 1859 and 1774 inhabitants. In the interwar period, 880 residents of Jewish faith lived in the village, which was around 85% of the total population. After the invasion of German troops on June 27, 1941, a ghetto was established, which was dissolved on October 3, 1942 after most of the Jews living in the ghetto had been murdered in the nearby forest. On February 6, 1944, Warkowytschi was liberated by the Red Army .
