NGC 3640 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E3 in the constellation Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 53 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter. She is the brightest member of the NGC 3640 group ( LGG 233 ).
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3630 , NGC 3641 , NGC 3643 , NGC 3645 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on February 23, 1784 .
