A wagon load is a load of freight that fills or uses as a single shipment, an entire freight wagon or truck .

In the case of trucks, the use of the term wagon load is usually limited to bulk goods such as bulk and liquid goods . So only for goods that cannot be loaded due to the nature of the cargo.

The term wagon load was also used by the railways to distinguish it from general cargo. In the case of a freight wagon loaded with a wagonload (also known as wagonload traffic), there is only one recipient and one sender for the railway. The freight wagon represents the transport packaging for the railways and thus becomes a freight item itself.

A wagon load is the smallest possible transport volume for a rail customer today, and the freight tariffs are designed accordingly. These tariffs are calculated based on weight, with a minimum weight tariff for each wagon type. This minimum tariff is 5, 10 or 15 tons depending on the type of freight wagon. If the total weight of the wagon load is less, the minimum tariff weight will be charged. The freight wagons loaded in this way are usually transported in single wagon traffic . A complete train with wagons from the same sender and recipient is called a block train. Here too, of course, each freight wagon has its own wagon load, but other tariffs apply to block trains.

In the past, the railway was familiar with express and general cargo traffic, in which the cargo was transported by different customers in the same wagon. For reasons of rationalization, these modes of transport have usually been relocated to the road today, although piece goods are still partly transported by rail on a partial route. Today, however, this traffic only takes place between the distribution centers or from there to major customers. This type of transport of the piece goods also falls under the term wagon load, since the piece goods from the starting point to the destination of the rail transport remain in the same wagon and thus form a total wagon load.
