Roses ( dt. "Roses") is a song of the American DJ - duo The Chainsmokers in cooperation with the American singer Elizabeth Mencel , known by her stage name Rozes . The song is the second single from the debut EP Bouqet and was released on June 16, 2015. Roses reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 , as well as the Top 25 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland .

background

The Chainsmokers heard about Rozes' song Limelight through Hype Machine , an English-language music blog , and invited the singer to co-write a song. Roses was already written within six hours at the first meeting, with Rozes being instrumental in writing the text. In the production of the song, the DJ duo was inspired by Max Martin and Taylor Swift , among others . According to the two of them, they wanted to produce pop music with a certain indie flair and, among other things, surprise the people whom they described as a one-hit wonder after their debut single #Selfie .

Roses was released in the summer of 2015, but was not yet able to achieve chart successes at the time of the release. After Justin Bieber had named the song as his current favorite song and also uploaded a video on Instagram in which he danced to this song, the song received some additional promotion and gradually entered the various single charts from the end of 2015.

The name of the song was decided later. Due to the repetitive passage of the text Say you'll never let me go , it made sense to name the song that way, but the Chainsmokers released the single Let You Go shortly before , so that a mix-up of the songs could not be ruled out.

Musical and content

Roses is an electropop song and is also assigned to the future bass by the Chainsmokers themselves and by various sources . The song, composed in four-four time , is written in E major and has a tempo of 100 beats per minute . The chords alternate between E and E sus2 , the vocal range extends from B 3 to B 4 . A break with a drop is characteristic of Roses , in which the initially simple, but from now on increased beat and the melody pause briefly and then the melody is continued in a different form.

Roses is mostly sung by Rozes, with Taggart partly doing the backing vocals . The structure of the song is rather unusual, so it begins with the single verse before hookline and chorus alternate. In terms of content, Roses is about a love that the lyric self never wants to end, which is particularly evident in the text line “Say you'll never let me go” in the chorus repeated several times becomes clear.

Reviews

Roses received positive reviews from the critics. Sara Natkins of The Music Ninja said that listening to the song "fills the ears with grace and the mind with visions of cloudless sky and sunshine." She also praises Roze's singing, which "harmonizes with the atypical voice of Taggart". Arielle Gray from Inyourspeakers.com gave the song eight out of ten points. She praised the versatility of the Chainsmokers and called Roses a "summer anthem". Mike Nied from Dayswithdestiny.com also praised the "new side of the DJ duo". For him, Roses is “one of the most dreamy pieces of pop perfection that I have heard in the recent past”. Chris Eschna from Dance-Charts.com described the song as "innovative and well produced". He went on to add: "The single has something of its own, so you just have to hear it to form your own opinion."

Commercial win

After the publication of Roses in the summer of 2015, commercial success and chart placements failed to appear despite positive reviews. Thanks to Justin Bieber's promotion, the song received media attention in autumn 2015 and reached number 95 on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 7, 2015 . In the coming weeks the song rose slowly but steadily, so that it reached the top 20 in mid-January 2016. From February 2016 Roses reached the top 10, number 6 on February 13, 2016 represents the highest position in these charts. In total, the song spent six weeks in the top 10 of the Hot 100. It was both for the Chainsmokers and for Rozes, the first top 10 hit in her home country. In the Billboard Hot Dance / Electronic Songs , Roses reached number 1 in early 2016 and was able to defend this position for three months. For over 3 million certificate units sold (sales and music streaming ), Roses was awarded three platinum records by the Recording Industry Association of America in October 2016 .

Spurred on by its success in the US charts, Roses also made it to the charts in Europe. The song reached the German music charts for the first time on January 22nd, 2016 at number 68. On April 1st, Roses reached number 24 and is therefore more successful in Germany, just as in the United States, than the debut single #Selfie . At the end of January 2016, the song also entered the Ö3 Austria Top 40 . With 18th place as the highest position, Roses reached the top 20 in Austria. The song entered the Swiss charts for the first time at the end of December 2015 . 20th place was achieved as the best placement.

With regard to the chart successes in the United States and in the rest of Europe, Roses positioned itself relatively late in the British single charts . On February 11, 2016, the song reached number 92 and rose to number 22 in the following weeks. Roses also achieved top 10 placements in Australia (5th place), New Zealand (8th place) and Norway (8th place).
