Mount Hartigan is an expansive, mainly snow-covered shield volcano with a few individually named secondary peaks in Marie-Byrd-Land .
The mountain was formed about 6 to 8.5 million years ago. It rises 2,815 m just north of Mount Sidley in the Executive Committee Range .
Scientists of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered it during an overflight on December 15, 1940. It is named after Rear Admiral Charles Conway Hartigan (1882–1942) of the United States Navy , member of the Executive Committee of the United States Antarctic Service
