The Chainsmokers

In addition to Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall, a number of other musicians were involved in the creation of the song. Tony Ann, made famous last year by a Paris piano cover, assisted with songwriting and piano. Emily Warren, who already co-wrote her songs several times, also acted as a songwriter at Sick Boy . Shaun Frank and Chris Gehringer were involved in production, mixing and mastering.

At the beginning of the new year, the single was promoted. After the duo presented their new logo on several social media platforms, they signed “How many likes is my life worth?”, A line of text from the song. From that day until the release on January 17, 2018, they were completely inactive on all platforms. The day before, the same slogan was displayed on a billboard in Times Square .

Musical and content

The song is based on 4/4 time and the tempo is 90 bpm . There is no clear structure in the track. Verses and bridge as well as pre-chorus and chorus are not clearly delimited from each other by the lyrics and are not identical in the different parts of the song. The song is introduced solely by Taggart's voice. A piano melody becomes clearer and clearer in the background. The drums are used for the first time in the first refrain. In a kind of bridge in the second run of the track, the sound is realigned again and a kind of finale is initiated.

The lyrics sung by Andrew Taggart describe the lyrical self to identify with one's personality. It speaks of everyday things that affect you and unconscious personality traits. Furthermore, it underlines its own role in society several times.

"And don't believe the narcissism
When everyone projects
And expects you to listen to 'em
Make no mistake, I live in a prison
That I build myself, it is my religion
And they say that I am the sick boy
Easy to say, when you don't take the risk, boy
Welcome to the narcissism
We're united under our indifference "

- Refrain, original excerpt

“And don't believe narcissism
When everyone comes to the fore
And expects you to listen to them
Make no mistake, I live in a prison
That I built myself, it's my religion
And they say I'm the sick boy
Easy to say, if you don't take the risk either, boy
welcome to narcissism
We are united under our indifference ”

reception

criticism

Sick Boy received mostly positive reviews. As with the previous singles and the album, their EDM style, which was characteristic until 2015, was missed, but the precise and clean production of the track was praised. The catchy tune and the lyrics were also emphasized positively.

“They still haven't come back to EDM, so if you're holding out on a remix like that, sorry we're disappointing you. Drew is still singing, so if you were hoping for a bang instrumental, sorry that we will disappoint you. However, regardless of its pop persistence, “Sick Boy” feels somehow more authentic than most of the other tracks on Memories… Do Not Open. The lyrics are a little cheesy, yeah. But the production of “Sick Boy” is much, much cleaner and of a more profound quality than anything from Memories ... Do Not Open. The piano is nicer, the drums are crisper and the direction clearer. "

- Matthew Meadow : YourEDM

“The Chainsmokers - Sick Boy” moves in the field of EDM pop. The number is peppered with modern influences and goes straight to your head the first time you listen. In terms of vocal technology, too, the track was produced on a very high level. The title should definitely become a topic for German radio stations. "
