The island of Portlligat is located at the entrance of the bay, separated from the mainland by a 30 meter narrow channel.

Salvador Dalí lived in Portlligat with his wife Gala since 1948 ; After his death in 1989, his house was rededicated as the Casa-Museu Salvador Dalí . Bay and island appear in several of Dalí's paintings; Examples are The Madonna of Portlligat (1949) and The Last Supper (1955).
