Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer (* 1912 in Figueres , † December 27, 1967 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish mathematician . The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize is awarded in his honor .

Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer had a severe physical handicap from birth, so he was in a wheelchair all his life. He did not go to school because the doctors felt that he was not up to the stress. Instead, he was tutored by his mother. His interest in mathematics was stimulated by books his cousin brought from the university library.

In 1938 he sent two papers to Jacques Hadamard , who arranged for one of these papers to be published in the Comptes Rendus and who also brought him into contact with Szolem Mandelbrojt . Later Sunyer i Balaguer was in contact with many other well-known mathematicians, such as Waclaw Sierpinski and AJ Macintyre. In total, he wrote over 40 mathematical papers. Since he was unable to write because of his handicap, he dictated it to his mother, and after her death in 1955, two cousins.

Sunyer i Balaguer's main area of work was function theory . In particular, a whole series of results on Taylor series and Dirichlet series with gaps come from him. But he also made contributions to other areas. He has received a number of prizes and awards for his work.
