The Pont de Besalú in Besalú , a Spanish city in the province of Girona ( Catalonia ), was built around 1315. The medieval bridge over the Fluvià river has been a protected monument since 1949 .
description
The bridge, which can only be used by pedestrians today, consists of three sections, which are supported together by eight arches made of ashlar stones , with the sections at an angle to each other. The arches have different spans and are supported by rocks in the river bed. A gate on the city side ensures access to the city. At the end of the westernmost section with four arches, the street is widened to a large square (Catalan creu grossa ) so that traffic could cross, after two more arches there is a smaller square to cross (Catalan creu petita ). The hexagonal tower with the portcullis is located between the two crossing points .
The oldest part of the bridge, which dates from the 11th or 12th century, is on the city side. The irregular masonry made of small stones resembles that found on the oldest buildings in the city. A stone with the year 1680 is built into one of the pillars of the second section, which suggests that a major renovation or reconstruction was completed that year. Repairs to flood damage to the flour mill and fulling mill are known from the same year .
history
There was probably a bridge at this point as early as Roman times . It is first mentioned in the documents in 1075. In 1284 the bridge was mentioned again in a document in connection with the sale of an orchard, although the bridge was probably located more upstream in the past, where the remains of pillars can still be seen, which are similar to the current bridge. The bridge was damaged by floods in 1315 and then rebuilt with a defense tower in the middle. Further floods in 1321, 1433, 1421, 1669, 1771 and 1790 damaged the bridge, so that it had to be repaired each time. In 1880 the tower and the gate on the bridge were demolished to facilitate the transport of machines for the local industry. In the Spanish Civil War two arches were blown up. Then the bridge was rebuilt.
