Palau-sator is a place and a municipality ( municipi ) in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia . The municipality also includes the villages of Fontclara , Sant Feliu de Boada , Sant Julià de Boada and Pantaleu .
location
Palau-Sator is located on a small hill of the coastal foothills of the Gavarres about 36 kilometers (driving distance) east of Girona or about six kilometers (air line) west of the Mediterranean coast at about 25 meters above sea level. d. M.

In the second half of the 19th century, the community, consisting of four villages, had over 700 inhabitants at times. The phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture have led to a constant decline in the population since then.
economy
In the past, the inhabitants lived mainly as a self-sufficient living from agriculture , which also included growing wine and keeping cattle. The place also served as an artisanal and mercantile center of several villages and hamlets in the area. In the meantime, many of the vacant houses have been converted into holiday apartments.
history
Roman pottery fragments have been found in the municipality , but no traces of settlement have yet been discovered. The place called Palatii Murorum or Palatio Maurore was inhabited as early as the early Middle Ages ; He was also protected by a castle ( castell ). The current place name is first mentioned in a document in the 14th century and means something like 'Palau near the castle'.

- Palau-sator
- The parish church of Sant Pere , built of quarry stones , dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. Century.
- The castle ruins will be opened on 10./11. Century attributed.
- Parts of the medieval fortifications are still preserved.
- Several houses in the winding streets of the listed town center show quarry stone masonry.
- Fontclara
- The former small Benedictine monastery of Sant Pau de Fontclara is mentioned in a document from the year 908 and was therefore most likely founded in the 9th century. It belonged as a priory to the Abbey of Sainte-Marie de Lagrasse ( Roussillon ). However, the buildings that have been preserved all date from the 11th and 12th centuries; they were in 15./16. Century partially expanded and changed. The apse of the former monastery church, now used as a parish church, is painted with frescos ( Majestas Domini and 12 apostles) from the 13th century.
- Sant Feliu de Boada
- The parish church of the same name was built in the 16th century.
- Sant Julià de Boada
- The parish church of the same name, Sant Julià de Boada, is an outwardly inconspicuous building from the 10th century with Mozarabic features such as B. Horseshoe arches .
- Pantaleu
- A round tower ( Torre cilíndrica ) from the Middle Ages has been preserved as a ruin.
