Sant Julià de Boada
The church of Sant Julià de Boada is one of the oldest buildings of Mozarabic architecture in Catalonia .
location
The church of Sant Julià de Boada is located in about 30 inhabitants, the village of the same name in the municipality ( Municipi ) of Palau-sator in the province of Girona in the autonomous region of Catalonia . It lies at a height of about 30 meters above sea level. d. M. The nearest major city, Girona , is about 38 kilometers (driving distance) to the west.
history
The existence of the church is documented since 934. Another document from 1362 names the place and church Sant Joan de Buadela . In the 18th century the building is described as ruinous; it served at times as a stable and as a storage room ( bodega ).
architecture
Exterior construction
The slightly angled rural building, consisting of an almost windowless nave , a kind of crossing area and a trapezoidal apse with an ornamental gable in between (perhaps a former bell gable ?) Is made of uncut natural stone - with the exception of the portal that was added later. Structural elements such as pilaster strips and cornices are missing, and the arched friezes that were so popular in Catalan architecture after the year 1000 are also missing . Below the southern eaves , however, some stones are laid in a kind of herringbone pattern . The entrance portal from more recent times is slightly indented in the lower area, the resting arch is designed as a horseshoe arch .
Interior
The approximately 3.20 meters wide and 3.50 meters long barrel-vaulted nave is unplastered; to the east - behind a choir or triumphal arch constructed from 36 well-hewn stones and designed as a horseshoe arch - is a "crossing square" measuring around 3.20 × 3.20 meters. The second choir arch leading to the apse is also designed as a horseshoe arch - some assume that it could even come from a previous Visigothic building. The two capitals of the eastern arch are decorated with simple - in Catalonia, however, unique - jagged motifs. The almost square apse, raised by a step, was formerly decorated with frescoes ; it is exposed through a rear arched window.
Furnishing
The church is equipped with a simple holy water font . The altar, made up of two larger and precisely hewn stones, is more recent (around 1980).
