List of domestic dogs

The Tornjak is an FCI recognized dog breed from Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia ( FCI group 2, section 2.2, standard no. 355 ). The AKC has been running the breed since May 2012 with a view to possible recognition in its Foundation Stock Service .

Origin and history

The Tornjak is a very old type of dog that is already mentioned in manuscripts in the 11th century . The name is derived from the word gate , which means "protective gate ". With the decline of the migrant sheepdog, the tornjaks also became fewer and fewer. In 1972 the remaining stocks were correctly recorded for the first time and further bred, which means that the numbers are at a stable level. Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are responsible for the development of the breed.

description

The Tornjak is the typical size of a shepherd dog with a strong build . His job was to defend the herd against predators such as wolf and bear . Males reach a size of 70 cm with a weight of about 50 kg. The coat is weatherproof, slightly wavy and dense with plenty of undercoat. All colors appear, in all combinations: from monochrome to spotted. The ears of the dogs are hanging, carried slightly protruding from the head, medium-sized, rounded. The tail is set high, feathered and carried clearly.

character

The dogs are typical herd guardian dogs , stubborn in the best sense of the word, defensive, independent. They are reserved or cautious towards strangers, not aggressive. They know their territory and behave differently inside than outside.

use

As a shepherd dog, guardian dog and companion dog .
