The Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG, usually short Bogestra or in its own spelling BOGESTRA, is a local public transport company in the central Ruhr area . It operates local public transport in Bochum , Witten and Gelsenkirchen , with the Vestische buses serving primarily the north of the city. In addition, most of the public transport in the city of Hattingen is carried out by her. Other lines lead to Castrop-Rauxel , Dortmund , Ennepetal , Essen , Herne and Sprockhövel and there is a stop at the Hagen-Vorhalle train station .

Bogestra is a member of the Rhein-Ruhr transport association . As part of the Eastern Ruhr Area Cooperation (KÖR), it works with the neighboring companies Vestische , DSW21 (Dortmunder Stadtwerke AG), VER (Verkehrsgesellschaft Ennepe-Ruhr mbH), HCR (Tram Herne-Castrop-Rauxel GmbH) and Hagener Straßenbahn AG .

The company's shares were listed on the Düsseldorf Stock Exchange; however, the shares were traded on a very narrow market. The note was discontinued at the request of the majority shareholder ( Holding for Supply and Transport Bochum ) and the resolution of the Annual General Meeting on August 26, 2016 ( squeeze-out ). The exclusion of private shareholders is a prerequisite for direct award in connection with Regulation (EC) No. 1370/2007 .

With 143.41 million passengers (in 2019), Bogestra is one of the largest local transport companies in the Ruhr area. It employs around 2,400 people. There are operating buildings, workshops and administrative facilities at nine locations. However, by 2005 there were a total of 38 operational and administrative buildings.

The Bogestra building with the main administration is located at Universitätsstrasse 58 in Bochum . Attached was the tram operation hall with workshop, which was abandoned in summer 2005 and relocated to an area on the western edge of the city center. The former wagon hall was demolished in spring 2007. The operations control center and technical control center are located not far from the head office on Buddenbergplatz, at the south entrance of the main train station .

On the site of the former colliery Engelsburg was 125 at the Essen Road (near the station Engel Str. Line 310) opened on 1 August 2005, the tram depot for the meter-gauge vehicles. The main tram workshop ( formerly in Gerthe ), the building yard (formerly in Hamme ), the technical department (formerly at Wittener Straße 100) and the training workshop are combined there, in addition to the car park .

The tram depot and the workshop for the sub-network in Gelsenkirchen are close to the city center on Hauptstrasse 55 , while the workshop for the standard-gauge U 35 tram is located in Riemke at Hofsteder Strasse 252. There are bus depots and workshops in Weitmar at Hattinger Strasse 427, in Gelsenkirchen-Ückendorf , Im Exterbruch 2 and in Witten at Crengeldanzstrasse 81b.

history

1896-1907

Bogestra was founded on January 13, 1896 in Berlin by the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen and the company Siemens & Halske AG . At the time it was founded, the route network comprised three lines built by Siemens & Halske in 1894 and 1895. These were the line from Herne to Bochum opened on November 23, 1894 with a length of 6.9 km, the line from Gelsenkirchen to Bismarck opened on November 3, 1895 with 3.4 km and the line opened on December 27 from Schalke via Gelsenkirchen and Wattenscheid to Zeche Holland with a length of 4.8 km. This means that when it was founded, the Bogestra already had a network around 15.1 km long. The construction and operation remained with Siemens & Halske AG, Bogestra itself initially only took on control functions.

Over the next 10 years the network grew. Due to its rapid construction, which had been forced due to competition from other transport companies, numerous wagons soon had to be reinforced and the tracks renovated. And although the number of passengers increased, this could not compensate for the investments in the route network. The expansion quickly came to a standstill and other transport companies laid their routes in the Bogestra area. Since Siemens & Halske AG lost interest in the lines that were not or only little profitable, the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen separated from the company at the end of 1907. However, he was guaranteed acceptance of vehicles for the next 15 years.

1908-1930

In 1908 a new partner was found in RWE AG . The industrialist Hugo Stinnes became chairman of the board . In the period from 1910 to 1930 the administration was based in Essen and was united with the Essen tram (SEG) . Hugo Stinnes tried in 1911 to merge the Bogestra with the Recklinghauser tram , the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and the Bochum-Castrop tram into a single company.

In the years after 1905 numerous other companies had penetrated the Bogestra traffic area:

date society
January 16, 1908 Municipal tram company in the district of Gelsenkirchen with the route from Herne to Höntrop
December 23, 1908 Kleinbahn Bochum-Gerthe-Harpen with the Bochum-Kanalstraße route to Kirchharpen and Gerthe
December 20, 1909 Bochum- Castrop tram from Bochum to Castrop
April 1, 1909 Southern German railway company from Essen-Katernberg to Gelsenkirchen

The First World War prevented further expansion of the network. Due to the poor economic situation, Bogestra, like many other companies, participated in freight transport. In 1920 operations were temporarily shut down and in 1923 a record level of debt was recorded. Only after the passenger numbers, which had always fallen before, began to rise again in 1924, was the expansion of the network continued.

In 1925/1926 the depot in Gelsenkirchen was expanded and on April 3, 1928 the largest depot in West Germany with a capacity of 200 cars opened on today's Universitätsstraße in Bochum. At the same time a new administration building was erected there so that the headquarters could be relocated from Essen back to Bochum.

1931-1939

The seat of the Westf. Tram in Gerthe-Hiltrop, most recently the main workshop of Bogestra

On August 12, 1931, Bogestra took over the lines of the insolvent Westphalian tram at the expense of the partner communities and, after bankruptcy proceedings were opened, on December 12 at the expense of the bankruptcy estate. On October 31, 1937, the bankruptcy proceedings ended. The Bogestra took over 79 km of the route, as well as 76 railcars and 19 trailer cars. On January 1, 1938, all other assets were also taken over.

On August 1, 1932, some routes were swapped with the Süddeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . Lines of the Bogestra, which lay in Essen area, came to the SEG and vice versa, lines of the SEG went to the Bogestra. On October 1, 1932, some lines of the Hattinger Kreisbahn , which were located in the area of the city of Bochum after incorporation, were transferred to the Bogestra by means of an arbitration award and on September 15, 1933 the remaining tram operations of the Hattinger Kreisbahn were taken over by the Bogestra.

At the beginning of 1938, after some lines had already been converted to omnibus traffic, the Bogestra had routes 195 km in length as well as 266 railcars and 131 trailer cars. In 1939 the Vestische Kleinbahn took over the route from Horst- Mitte to Horst-Süd and from Schalke to Buer .

1940-1951

Line network in May 1949

At the beginning of the Second World War , the Bogestra was able to return to profitability. In addition, there were freight and mail journeys in the war years. A specially built operating track in Wattenscheid in 1942 was probably only used for postal traffic. The bombing raids on Bochum and Gelsenkirchen began in 1943 . This also led to destruction in the track network and in the company's vehicle fleet. Despite the damage, it was possible to maintain operations on numerous routes. On November 4 and 6, 1944, Bochum and Gelsenkirchen fell victim to air raids , which also killed around 2/3 of the tracks and half of the vehicle fleet. Until the invasion of the Allied troops on April 10, 1945, only a provisional operation could be maintained, which was then stopped for the time being.

On May 24, 1945, operations were resumed on around 55 km of personnel. In the period that followed, further lines were repaired and reopened. At the end of 1950, a total of 27 lines were in operation again and the reconstruction could be considered complete.

1951-1969

Remains of the turning loop of line 320 in front of the main station in Witten

During this time, the Bogestra network was modernized in large areas. Many less frequented routes have been converted to bus operation. The building of the Emil H. von Lienen vehicle factory at Wittener Str. 100, which was also responsible for some of the Bogestra vehicle bodies, was taken over as the central workshops in 1957. An era also came to an end during this time. On January 1, 1968, mail was transported for the last time by Bogestra car.

1970-1999

In April 1971, under the symbol of the red dot, there were track blockades and street demonstrations against the tariff increases of the Bogestra for several days.

On November 22, 1973, two lines (8, 18) in Bahnhofstraße in Herne were relocated to Schulstraße, which was running parallel, due to the beginning of the light rail construction. In 1974, the tram was laid underground in Gelsenkirchen. In 1978, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia established binding guidelines for action. In addition to the expansion of the S-Bahn connections by the Deutsche Bundesbahn, these also envisaged light rail connections supported by the municipalities. As part of the Rhein-Ruhr Stadtbahn, three connections were planned in the Bogestra area:

Tram stop German Mining Museum (U 35)
Tram line 302 at the
Gelsenkirchen Hauptbahnhof stop

In contrast to the meter- gauge tram lines of the Bogestra, these lines should be operated on standard gauge with elevated platforms and the type B light rail car on their own railway bodies. The first light rail section was opened in 1989 as U 35 between Bochum main station and Herne Schloss Strünkede. This was the first cross-city underground tunnel in Germany, because the city border between Bochum and Herne is passed underground. According to information from the Bogestra, this underground city connection is still unique in Germany. The extension beyond Bochum Hauptbahnhof via the Ruhr University to Bochum Hustadt took place in 1993. The sections to Witten and Recklinghausen were not implemented by the respective municipalities for reasons of cost.

The following tunnel sections were built as part of the planned light rail network:

Opening date Line (s) route
May 26, 1979 8/18 Ramp Bochum Bergmannsheil - main station
November 28, 1981 308/318 Bochum main station - ramp Ruhrstadion
September 1, 1984 127/301/302 Rampe Gelsenkirchen Rheinelbestraße - Ramp music theater
2nd September 1989 U 35 Bochum Central Station - Herne Castle Strünkede
November 28, 1993 U 35 Bochum main station - ramp waterway
May 29, 1994 301 Gelsenkirchen Neumarkt - Ruhr Zoo ramp
January 29, 2006 302/310 Ramp Bochum Jacob-Meyer-Straße - Ramp Lohring
January 29, 2006 306 Ramp Bochum town hall - connection to the main train station

In addition to the U 35 standard-gauge line, these tunnels were also used by the meter-gauge tram lines in the so-called light rail advance service. On the surface, routes have already been prepared for light rail operations, for example line 310 on Essener Straße.

An articulated bus (built in 2003) by Bogestra with a uniform color scheme from the KöR (Cooperation Eastern Ruhr Area) at Nordsternpark in Gelsenkirchen

In order to survive in an increasingly competitive and save costs, the Bogestra founded in 1999 with neighboring farms DSW21 , streetcar Herne Castrop-Rauxel and Vestische trams the cooperation eastern Ruhr (BOD). Synergy effects are to be used in different areas, such as the joint procurement of buses with a uniform color scheme, the exchange of workshop services, a joint website and other projects.

The Gelsenkirchen tram depot was officially reopened on May 18, 2003 after a three-year renovation period. Parts of the historical facade were preserved, the newly built wagon hall now offers space for 35 low-floor trams.

Solaris Urbino, Bogestra, in use on the CE56 line (new: SB 36) (left) and Stadtbahn in use on the U17 line (then EVAG , now Ruhrbahn ) at the Buerer Straße stop in Gelsenkirchen-Horst

On July 4, 2004, the last section of the U 17 in the Gelsenkirchen city area was completed. Since then, the section of today's Ruhrbahn between Essen - Altenessen and Gelsenkirchen-Horst has been completely rebuilt into a standard-gauge light rail.

The Engelsburg depot was opened on August 1, 2005 after a construction period of around three years. On the 102,000 m² site there is the 40 × 220 m storage hall for 55 low-floor trams , the central workshop, the building yard and the energy center for the meter-gauge trams. Overall, the construction of the facility cost 69 million euros, 90% of which was taken over by the federal and state governments . This sum also included an ecological compensation area of around 86,000 m² and a comprehensive RE concept. Around 85% of the water consumed on the site is cleaned and reused. A previously unknown tunnel was retained in its current form, since it, as the site of the former in the course of time colliery Engelsburg between Donetsk Ring , Angel Straße, Essen Road and Goldhammer Bach was broke into a refuge for bats has developed . The official opening took place on September 18, 2005 with an open house, which around 80,000 visitors used to take a look at the new depot.

Shell of the subway station Bochum Rathaus Süd. Below you can see the tracks of lines 302 and 310. Across the bridge through the underground station, over which line 306 runs today

On January 29, 2006, two new tram tunnels were opened in downtown Bochum. One tunnel crosses the city center in a west-east direction and takes lines 302 and 310. This 3 km long route has four train stations: Bochumer Verein / Jahrhunderthalle, Bochum town hall south, Bochum main station (shared platform with U 35) and Lohring. This tunnel is actually intended for the previously planned U 21. Line 306 runs through the second tunnel from the town hall to the main train station. It has no other stations, but as a special feature it runs through the Rathaus Süd train station on a bridge structure and ends underground in the upper track area (line 308/318) of the Bochum main train station underground station. A connecting curve from the 302/310 tunnel at Bochum's town hall also ensures that the Engelsburg depot can be reached from the 308/318 tunnel. With these two tunnels, the last trams also disappeared from downtown Bochum. On the surface, Massenbergstrasse, on which lines 302/306/310 previously operated, has been redesigned as a rail-free boulevard . However, bus lines 345 and 368 continue to operate there. In addition, line 336 has also been running on the boulevard since the official opening.

Since August 1st, 2009, Bogestra employs 100 trainees for the first time.

Many buses have had the computer-aided operations control system (AVMS) since the end of 2009.

On August 1, 2010, the electronic boarding control system (EEKS) was introduced, which initially led to a number of complaints due to unaccepted tickets.

A new route has been under construction since autumn 2012 from Witten-Crengeldanz via Langendreer to Laer Mitte with a branch to the Langendreer S-Bahn station , which will be served by lines 310 and partially 302 after completion. The section to Langendreer station (line 302) was opened in October 2017.

Between February and July 2018, the timetable frequency between Gelsenkirchen main station and Buer Rathaus was compressed to a 5-minute cycle on an experimental basis during rush hour , in connection with the reduction of fine dust . The project was put on hold at the start of the NRW summer school holidays.

One of the new Stadler Tango light rail vehicles on the U 35

As of December 15, 2019, the entire timetable has been converted into the so-called line network 2020. This is the biggest change in the history of the transport company and is due to revised local transport plans and due to the adjustment to the cycle times of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn . Many new tram lines (e.g. 305, 309, 316) and bus routes (e.g. 339, 352, 374) will be introduced or supplement the existing route, in some cases by changing the route. The so-called sister lines 344/346 and 345/355 are also planned. Different lines (e.g. 344, 352, 355, 357/358, 360, 377, 388, 394) are discontinued or just get new numbers. The last City Express line on Bogestra (CE31) will also be replaced by the new 350 bus line. Some lines have changed line routes (e.g. 354, 364, 369, 390). With the trams, the timetable takes getting used to: In practice, the 7½-minute rhythm provided on some sections is run at seven-eight-minute intervals to avoid half-minute departure times. Between March and April 2020, the Bogestra ran the Saturday schedule on all lines from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. The reason for this was the spread of the COVID-19 virus and the sharp decline in the number of customers during the contact restrictions. Lines that are only served Monday to Friday in the regular timetable were not served.

outlook

tram

The route is expected to be built on the former Opel site from August 2020. After completion, it will be served by line 302 from the Laer Mitte stop.

On lines 308/318, the two single-track sections on 308/318, the section between Gerthe Mitte and the current terminus at Schürbankstrasse and the section between Linden Mitte and Dahlhausen train station are to be expanded to double-track in the long term. A first section in Linden between the Linden Mitte and Zentrum Augusta Linden stops was opened again on September 1, 2008 after a construction period of over a year.

The measures to modernize and accelerate line 306 in the Bochum and Herne urban areas have been completed. The former single-track section of the line on Riemker Straße has also been expanded to double-track.

On line 301, the low-floor expansion will continue on Horster Straße with the removal of the single track at the Buer Süd Bahnhof level crossing .

In March 2008, the delivery of 30 new low-floor trams of the Stadler Variobahn type began, which are to replace some of the type M light rail vehicles . The second series of 15 Stadler Variobahn trains was delivered from 2013 to 2015 . A third series of 42 trams with an option for up to 8 additional trams was ordered in August 2015. Delivery began at the end of September 2016. They should be furnished according to a new seating concept and also receive more robust impact protection. They are to completely replace the NF6D railways , which are now susceptible to damage, by 2020.

The plan is to continue expanding line 310 to two tracks throughout the city of Witten.

Light rail

With the U 35, the long planned northern extension from Herne to Recklinghausen is still possible, even if it is not intended for the foreseeable future. At the southern end of the U 35, however, there are plans to extend the route by two stations from Hustadt to Bochum University (formerly Bochum University of Applied Sciences). According to the original light rail concept , the extension to the south over Lake Kemnader to Witten main station was planned instead, but this will not be pursued further because of the complex engineering structures required and because of the route through sparsely populated areas. Despite a corresponding decision by the Main Committee of the City of Bochum on July 23, 2003, construction has not yet started because there are still no binding funding commitments from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. For this reason, the planned start of construction in 2005 has already been exceeded. In the meantime, the Bochum City Council has decided not to start construction before 2010; This has not yet happened at the beginning of 2016 either.

In August 2007, the delivery of six new Stadler Tango railcars began , so that all trains can run in double traction and to increase the vehicle reserve (and also for the planned expansion to Bochum University). The six vehicles have been in regular service since 2008.

Summary

The plans for a standard-gauge light rail network from the 1970s will most likely no longer be implemented for reasons of cost. From today's perspective, the U 35 line will remain the only standard-gauge line. In contrast, the meter-gauge lines on the surface are being expanded and, as far as possible, should offer level access to the low-floor trams by means of appropriately adapted platforms .
