Municipal tram company, district of Gelsenkirchen

The municipal tram company in the district of Gelsenkirchen was founded on April 12 and July 12, 1906, respectively. The municipalities involved in the founding had already been planning a route from Castrop via Herne , Wattenscheid and Höntrop to Königsteele , from Castrop via Horsthausen , Baukau and Crange to Wanne and from Herne via the Von der Heydt colliery to Baukau since 1888 . There were even draft contracts when the company was founded. The district of Gelsenkirchen , the city of Wattenscheid and the communities of Baukau, Eickel , Günnigfeld , Holsterhausen , Hordel and Westenfeld were involved in the company . The municipality of Eickel was chosen as the seat. The construction of the line between Höntrop and Baukau was then carried out by Siemens-Schuckertwerke GmbH . On October 24, 1907, the concession for the line was granted. In the city of Wattenscheid, the line was parallel to a line operated by Bochum-Gelsenkirchener Straßenbahnen AG (BOGESTRA), so that the two companies were in direct competition on this section.

Since the operation was not cost-covering, the solution was to build new lines. Routes were planned from Wanne to Höntrop, from Wanne to Gelsenkirchen, from Wanne to Röhlinghausen and from Herne to Wanne. Since the routes were not built at first, the financial difficulties continued to grow. So the decision was made to connect with other companies. BOGESTRA offered to purchase the route. However, the decision was made to lease the line to the Westphalian Tram on August 1, 1913, retroactively to April 1 , after the latter had committed to building connecting lines. On July 8, 1914, the extension of the line from Herne to Recklinghausen and an extension in Herne went into operation.

In the 1920s, the line from Herne to Höntrop was shut down due to financial difficulties with the Westphalian tram. On October 14, 1922, the BOGESTRA resumed operations on the disused section between Herne and Eickel. The remaining section was not reactivated until September 16, 1924.

In the course of the regional reform on April 1, 1926, many of the co-owners in the cities of Bochum, Wanne-Eickel and Wattenscheid went up. On July 21st, the rest of the Gelsenkirchen district merged into the city of Gelsenkirchen. The tram company became the property of the Westphalian tram.
