Location and history

Gelsenkirchen-Erle is north of the Rhein-Herne Canal and the Emscher . In the southeast it borders directly on the forest of the Resser Mark. The district is divided into the locations Erle, Berger Feld and Middelich. Several streams flow through the district, such as B. the Leither Mühlenbach and the Knabenbach.

The district is surrounded exclusively by other districts of the city of Gelsenkirchen . In the west, Erle borders on Beckhausen , in the northwest on Buer , in the northeast on Resse and in the east on Resser Mark . With Resse and Resser Mark, alder forms the Gelsenkirchen district east. All of these districts were historically part of the former city of Buer , like Alder ; the Resser Mark used to belong to the immediate outer area of the village of Erle. In the south, the Erle district borders on Bismarck and, to the west, on Schalke-Nord , both on the other side of the Emscher.

In the Middle Ages, since 1230, large parts of the peasants adjoining Buer to the south-east in what is now Erler's territory were farmed from the manor house Leythe, which is reinforced with battlements and surrounded by a moat . The Graf Bismarck colliery later acquired large parts of the property and began mining coal in shaft 3 in the immediate vicinity of the estate in 1894. After the colliery closed early in the 1960s, green spaces were created there. All shafts except shaft 1/4 (in Schalke-Nord on the other side of the Emscher) as well as the main administration of this important Gelsenkirchen colliery were in Erle (including today's Resser Mark).

A small bunker from the Second World War has been preserved near the hospital on Cranger Strasse , Erles' main street .
