The Erle enclosure (officially: Gelsenkirchen-Erle Tunnel ) is an enclosure on the A 2 between the Gelsenkirchen-Buer and Herten junctions . It crosses under Cranger Strasse ( B 226 ) and two other streets in Alder in the form of a 320-meter-long open-cut road tunnel . Construction started in 2001; statistical year of construction is 2004; the final completion took place in 2007. The six-lane expansion of the A 2 on this section also ended in that year.

For a long time, three bridges connected the parts of Erles separated by the motorway. As part of the six-lane expansion, based on proposals from a citizens' initiative, instead of a noise protection wall, the entire roofing of the motorway, which runs in this area in a lower area, was checked and finally implemented. The first ideas for capping the A 2 had already been voiced in the run-up to the Emscher Park International Building Exhibition . However, they failed at the time for reasons of cost.

Due to the problems of the existing mining area, the superstructure consisting of two single-span girders with coupling plates was reinforced in the area of the central support. In the areas between the intersecting streets, a 80 cm deep layer of earth was poured for the vegetation. The eastern and western portal areas adjoining the tunnel exits are each 30 meters long and shielded with semicircular, royal blue acrylic glass signs that are visible from afar .

A publicly accessible park was created on the cover of the enclosure.

In a two-year project, the tunnel in Gelsenkirchen-Erle will be renovated and modernized from February 2020 for eleven million euros. The entire tunnel technology, the monitoring technology, the emergency power supply and the precautions for emergencies are completely replaced.
