Gerthe is a district of Bochum that lies in the north and borders on Herne , Castrop-Rauxel and Dortmund .
Despite the Lorraine major mine and the associated chemical works that shaped the image of the district, green spaces and agriculture have been preserved on its edge.
Gerthe owns a historic office building that houses the Bochum-Nord district council, a school center (with the Heinrich von Kleist high school and the Anne Frank secondary school), the St. Maria-Hilf hospital and the Lorraine cultural center . In addition to its function as a cabaret, the latter is a kind of start-up agency for artists. The listed churches of St. Elisabeth and the Christ Church are worth seeing .
history
On April 1, 1907, Hiltrop was incorporated. On February 3, 1914, part of Holthausen near Castrop was added. Harpen was incorporated into Bochum with parts of Altenbochum and Bövinghausen near Castrop on April 1, 1926 through the law on the new regulation of the communal borders in the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial districts . Gerthe followed on August 1, 1929, with a smaller part coming to Herne.
At the time of National Socialism, the Zeche Lothringen forced labor camp was located in the industrial park on Arbeiterenstrasse . Today a residential project is located here, which takes care of the historical processing of the camp.
