Parish Church of St. Elisabeth

The Roman Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth is a listed church building in Gerthe , a district of Bochum in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The monumental neo-Romanesque assembly was built from 1912 to 1913 based on a design by Johann Franz Klomp . It consists of a transept basilica oriented from north-east to south-west , the dominating tower and the parsonage that is structurally connected to the south-east. The buildings were damaged in World War II , the damage was repaired by 1952.

Central nave

The southwestern choir and the side choirs close in a semicircle. The tower is modeled on that of Paderborn Cathedral , it stands in the southern corner between the choir and the transept, with the parsonage attached. All components are richly structured and clad with rough Ruhr sandstone . The entrance facade in the northeast is particularly elaborately structured by rows of windows, wall columns, blind arcades and round arch friezes. In the tympanum of the main portal is the rose miracle of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia depicted on the Trumeau of St. Archangel Michael . The pillars of the portal are supported by lions. The side portals are designed as gabled gates. Semicircular chapel porches are attached to the west bays of the side aisles . The first painting from 1929 is lost.

Since 2008 the church and the parish of St. Elisabeth belong to the Catholic parish Liebfrauen Bochum.

Furnishing

The pieces date from around 1929:

  • The last supper relief from the former high altar was created by the sculptor Georg Busch .
  • The crucifixion group (in a new arrangement) was a gift from the director of the neighboring Lorraine colliery , which caused severe damage to the church.
  • Representations of the litany of All Saints' Day can be seen on the cheeks .
  • The bell is four-part. The three large bells c ′, es ′ and f ′ were made from cast steel by the Bochum Association in 1966. The small bell g 'is a bronze bell and was cast in 1925 in the Otto bell foundry in Bremen-Hemelingen.
